That's it? Just one piece?
Yes, just one piece. We're keeping it simple.
Three rehearsals:
1. Thursday, March 22, 7:00-8:00
2. Sunday, April 8, 1:15-3:00
(1:15-2:00 Tenor/Bass, 2:00-3:00 tutti)
3. Thursday April 19, 7:00-7:45
Three performances and call times
All of Us will be the final piece on the program.
April 21, concert runs 5:00-7:00 pm. Your call is 4:00 pm for a pre-concert run-through.
April 22, concert runs 3:00-5:00 pm. Be ready to warm up at intermission, 3:45.
April 28, concert runs 5:00-7:00 pm. Be ready to warm up at intermission, 5:45.
What is the location?
The location for all rehearsals and performances is the First United Methodist Church, 1421 Spruce St., Boulder.
(The church parking lot is currently closed. Parking is available on nearby streets and in the pay parking garage at 15th and Spruce.)
Attendance requirements:
We are asking singers to commit to all three rehearsals and all three performances.
However, if you’d really like to participate but can’t attend everything,
please indicate that when you fill out the form and we’ll discuss.
Musical/vocal requirements:
We won’t do auditions.
We are looking for decently experienced singers with, ideally,
some choral or ensemble singing in their background, and we are trusting you to self-identify accurately.
We are not intending this as an opportunity for people who have no prior singing experience.
We are asking people to memorize the music.
We will give you good rehearsal recordings and sheet music well in advance of the first rehearsal.
A clarification:
We already have a good number of Resonance singers who will be singing tenor.
We are not adding additional women with tenor-range voices to the chorus for this project.
We are seeking what we don't have already in our midst--"male" vocal sound and energy--
to create an SATB chorus with a full range of vocal color.
(We have not addressed our invitation specifically to male singers,
because the invitation is inclusive of trans individuals
and non-gender binary individuals with "male" vocal sound.)
MORE INFORMATION:
What is this piece about?
From the composer's notes: "This piece comes from a concert length work I composed called Considering Matthew Shepard. As a stand-alone piece, it can be sung in a wide variety of contexts. At its core, it is intended to be a jubilant call to remember the inherent value and radiance in every living being, indeed, in every aspect of Creation. It is a song of celebration—raising up the voices of all of us, with special attention given to those in our world who have been marginalized, mistreated or simply not seen. I have a vision for a huge tent where we all are welcomed…I was inspired to compose the full concert length work to pay tribute to a young gay man, Matthew Wayne Shepard, whose heartbreaking death in 1998 pierced the hearts of countless people around the world. May your singing of All of US come from the heart and may it be a vibrant declaration of love, celebration, and deep respect for all beings."
Who is Resonance?
Founded in 2002, Resonance Women’s Chorus sings contemporary women’s choral music with an emphasis on songs of social awareness,
with the intention of nourishing and affirming all who are working to create social change in our community.
We care a lot about authentic voice, relevance of texts, and the healing power of ensemble singing.
Resonance is 125 women.
The chorus is led by Artistic Director Sue Coffee, with Accompanist Caitlin Strickland and Organizing Maven Janis Bohan.
Why is Resonance inviting tenors and basses to sing?
Adding tenor and bass voices to our sound on this particular piece, with its ecstatic vision of the big tent, seems perfect. It will make for a thrilling sound and powerful statement.
We are celebrating our 15th anniversary this year.
Reaching out into our community in this way feels like a really fun and timely thing to do.
What should I wear for the performances?
Performance dress is basic black.
Do I get free tickets?
You get into all three concerts free, of course. You will get one comp ticket for a guest at the performance of your choice.
We aren’t offering you more free tickets because we’d love for you to invite friends to come and buy tickets.
$15 general admission, $10 senior/student
Will there be a recording of this performance?
Yes. It will be made available to you for $10.
How many singers are you hoping to recruit?
Between 50 and 75.
I've been in that church. How are you going to fit us all on the stage?
We've done it before. Resonance and Denver Gay Men's Chorus sang together many years ago, with a total of 200 voices.
There's room on the stage and in front of the stage. Don't you worry about that.
